What are Essential Oils?

Essential Oils are the natural, concentrated true essence of a plant that are extracted from the plant using a distillation process. Typically this is done using steam or water, and many of the parts of the plant is used, including the roots, leaves, stems, flowers, or bark. Essential Oils have been around since the Ancient Egyptians (3500 B.C.) and were commonly used in their daily lives and processes. They were the first to extract the Oils from plants with the use of heat. The Greeks perfected the process of extraction by discovering a way to distill the oils for their use in their spiritual practices and every day health and well-being.

Benefits of Essential Oils

There is considerable scientific research that supports the ability of essential oils to deter a wide range of bacterial, viral, and/or other disease causing microorganisms when diffusing oils into the environment and applied to the skin when diluted with a carrier oil. As essential oils are diffused, the oil particles enter the atmosphere, they remove odors and purify the air.

Essential oils also work energetically, assisting us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. They help raise our vibrations and mood when we are feeling low. Each essential oil has its own property for healing, relaxation, and mood enhancement. Essential Oils can also assist in balancing the Chakras.

Aromatherapy

Many of you practice aromatherapy and may not even realize it. Any time you use a fragrant plant extract in your bath, put on massage oil, light incense, or some scented candles made with essential oils, etc., you are practicing a form of aromatherapy.  Essential oils used in aromatherapy may relieve stress, stimulate the body's energy levels, promote restful sleep and relaxation, reduce anxiety, nasal congestion, and alleviate some symptoms of depression.

When you inhale a fragrance, it travels to the brain and nervous system through the stimulation of the olfactory nerves. Olfaction, the sense of smell, is the only one of our five sense that is directly connected to the limbic system, which is the part of the brain that controls blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, memory, and hormonal balance. The limbic system regulates fear, anger, anxiety, depression, happiness, and sadness. It is believed that a scent entering the olfactory system has the ability to effect all these emotions.

Essential Oils & Crystals

Crystals and Essential Oils work amazing together and resonate WITH each other. When the crystals are matched with the highest resonating Essential oil, it facilitates our natural balance and equilibrium. Healing on every level is enhanced and our sense of wholeness is restored as our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies become aligned and attuned.

Oil Tips

These are some essential tips to know prior to using essential oils.

1) Less is more! Oils are highly concentrated. A drop or two is more than enough.
2) Dilute. Dilution increases the surface area of absorption, it helps dry skin absorb the oils better, and prevents sensitivities. Use a carrier oil like Jojoba Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil.
3) Avoid direct sunlight. Some oils, like citrus oils, are photosensitive and can cause issues if you don't avoid the sun for 12-24 hours after using.
4) Avoid using plastic. Some oils, like citrus oil will eat through and break down plastic. Use glass or ceramic to create a blend.
5) Buyer beware! Be careful who you buy from as some oils are counterfeit and/or unsafe. You never know what you're getting when you don't buy from a reputable distributor. Always look for "100% Therapeutic grade" on the label.

Safety

When using essential oils, please be aware of the safety issued involved in order to prevent any adverse effects. Its important to Oil-ducate yourself in order to use essential oils safely.

1) Be careful if you are pregnant or nursing! Some oils are not recommended for use with pregnant or nursing, and you should research which oils are safe, or avoid using essential oils during pregnancy or nursing.
2) Not all oils are kid safe! Never use an undiluted oil on your baby or child. Children only require half of the amount adults do. To determine whether an oil is child safe, do your research!!
3) Not all oils are pet safe! There are a lot of heartbreaking stories going around about this. Do your research before using or diffusing essential oils around your pets. Animals can benefit from essential oils too, but they need to be heavily diluted and researched to determine whether they are on the safe list. There are some oils that should never be used around them, and what's safe for dogs, may be toxic to cats. Every pet is different. Never diffuse oils in an enclosed room that your pet cannot leave on their own, and always consult a Veterinarian before using!
